Advanced GCE in Art and Design – (A2)
Course Requirements:
Interested, well motivated students, able to show some evidence of artistic ability and visual awareness. It is preferable, but not essential to have achieved A-C grade at GCSE Art.
Course Content:
The unendorsed course enables students to explore a range of 2 or 3 dimensional approaches to their studies and should show work from 2 or more of the following disciplines: Painting and drawing, printing, sculpture/ceramics and textiles.
Visits to Galleries, Exhibitions and sites of interest where source material and information is gathered will be an important part of the course. Students will be expected to take photographs and work directly into their ‘Work Journals’.
ADVANCED SUBSIDIARY (AS)
There are 3 units of work required for AS. These may form a complete qualification or count as 50% A2.
Unit 1
THEMATIC ENQUIRY
15% A2
30% AS
Students will need to show a personal response in their work to a given starting point-showing development of ideas and outcomes.
Examples – students could:
1. Explore their own localities both built and natural.
2. Work from the human form.
3. Explore the relationships between artifacts and/or natural objects.
4. Explore the effects of time and nature on people, things and places.
A ‘Work Journal’ must be included in this submission showing research, exploration of media, analysis, idea development and outcomes.
Unit 2
EXPRESSIVE STUDY
15% A2
30% AS
In this unit, projects will be set from which students will be encouraged to use and develop their understanding of the expressive nature of the formal elements of Art and Design (colour, form, line, pattern, shape, texture, tone). This will include experimenting with practical materials and also the study into the way other Artists, crafts persons and Designers across time and cultures have undertaken similar studies.
Unit 3
EXTERNALLY SET ASSIGNMENT
(Similar to GCSE)
20% A2
40% AS
This will represent the end of the AS course. Students will have a 6 week preparatory period for the ‘Controlled Test’, followed by supervised periods totaling 8 hours. All the work for this assignment will form the unit of work for assessment.
ADVANCED LEVEL (A2)
Unit 4
CONTEXTUAL STUDY - 15% A2
Work for this unit should show a link between the students own practical work with that of historical and contemporary references.
The study may take the form of a written and illustrated dissertation (2000 – 3000 words) or an annotated sketch book or display which should include a written commentary of not less than 1000 words.
Unit 5
CREATIVE PROBLEM SOLVING - 15% A2
The problem solving process is defined as
- identifying a creative problem
- undertake investigative and research work into the problem
