Our Reception children are given the best possible start to their education through our exciting and challenging curriculum. The Foundation curriculum is topic based and follows the seven fundamental areas of learning. Each area is introduced through a range of fun, multi-sensory and interactive activities and both the indoor and outdoor learning environments are used to enhance learning. Their experience is further enhanced by specialist teaching in French and Music.
Communication and Language development gives our children opportunities to experience a rich language environment, develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves and to learn to speak and listen in a range of situations.
French is started at the Foundation Stage with pupils quickly learning short phrases about the weather as well as greetings, numbers and other vocabulary featured in our games and stories. Our lessons involve lots of games and songs and the emphasis is on having fun.
Physical Development provides our children with opportunities to develop their co-ordination, control and movement. They are also helped to understand the importance of physical activity and to understand the importance of keeping healthy.
Personal, Social and Emotional Development allows our children to develop a positive sense of themselves and others and to form good relationships with both their peers and adults. They are taught to respect each other and how to manage and express their feelings. Positive behaviour is reinforced and they are encouraged to have confidence in their own abilities.
Literacy development encourages our children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. The children read every day and experience a wide range of both fiction and non-fiction books. Writing is encouraged in all areas of the classroom and a daily letters and sounds lesson is taught.
Mathematics provides our children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers as well as calculating simple addition and subtraction problems. The children also learn to solve problems involving time, money, shape and measures.
Understanding the World helps our children to make sense of their physical world and their community. They are given opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.
Expressive Arts and Design enables our children to explore a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities for them to share their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play and design technology.
Music is a vibrant, exciting way to aid learning. We focus on singing, with the many physical and emotional benefits of breath control, posture, expression and understanding of text and mood. Instruments are explored and much enjoyment can be gained in discovering the different timbre of a wide variety of sounds as well as different rhythms.
