Biologists, Biofuels and Shell Global Solutions
On Wednesday 9th of November the AS Biology students were taken to Shell Global Solutions near Ellesmere Port.
The group were met by a representative of Shell before being given a tour of the Electron Microscopy Unit. The group met several research scientists and could see how a career in scientific research would allow a graduate to work for a global company such as Shell. The Sixth Form were given information on Shell’s quest to produce biofuels from algal clusters. These new fuels will hopefully replace our dependence on fossil fuels in the future.

The pupils also had the opportunity to use very expensive scanning and transmission electron microscopes which is part of their ‘A’ level specification. Seeing and using these incredible machines not only furthered their understanding of electron microscopy, but also helped to increase our interest and understanding in Biology.
The Sixth Form would like to extend their thanks to Mr Gallagher for organising this visit.
