College Chapel Choir Performance at Lincoln Cathedral

Abbey Gate College Chapel Choir enjoyed rave reviews from the Clergy and congregations at Lincoln Cathedral during its recent five day stay to sing four Evensongs.

The 60 strong choir was conducted by Director of Music Stewart Smith and accompanied by ex-pupil James Kealey on the Organ. This was Stewart Smith’s final performance as director of the choir which was formed 39 years ago. Over that time, the choir has performed in most English Cathedrals as well as touring extensively abroad. The repertoire for the tour to Lincoln contained music by Stanford, Bairstow, Ireland, Wood and the large anthem by Hubert Parry, ‘Hear my Words ye People’. Following this anthem at the final Evensong, the choir finished with the hymn ‘Christ Triumphant’ with a descant written by Stewart Smith.

Mr Smith said: "It has been a privilege and pleasure to work with all the members of the Chapel Choir both past and present over the past 39 years. It is their hard work and dedication backed by very supportive parents which has enabled the choir to gain international recognition and to be a flagship for Abbey Gate College."

He is looking forward to teaching piano at Abbey Gate College next year whilst continuing to build the 30 strong Choir at St Oswald’s Malpas where he has been Organist for the past seven years.
