Football - v Oswestry School - Lost 1-2

Saturday 1st October 2011

1st XI v Oswestry School
Friendly (Away)

Lost 2-1

Goalscorer: Nicholas Bellis

On a blistering hot Saturday morning the 1st XI started slowly against an energetic and combative Oswestry team. Early chances came Oswestry’s way and without Jon Steventon in defence and some good goal keeping from Harry Fairclough they would have taken an early lead.

The forwards were sluggish to react and numerous offsides slowed down any attacking hopes. Oswestry deservedly took the lead with a thumping drive form 20 yards and the same player converted from the penalty spot after a rash challenge. Half time 2-0.

Half time saw a complete transformation as the Abbey Gate midfield finally woke up and threaded through balls for the ever willing Nick Bellis to run onto. Nick hit the post two minutes in to the restart and then Jon Steventon hit the underside of the bar from 20 yards. Abbey Gate eventually pulled a goal back when Nick Bellis, who had continually outpaced the home defence, slid in a classy finish after 20 minutes.

Oswestry also had their chances but Koenraad Schmeink and George Siddorn stood firm in defence whilst Tom Davies tackled and competed for every ball. An equaliser seemed inevitable but the luck of the bounce and the important refereeing decisions went against Abbey Gate.

A fantastic team effort could not muster an equaliser and the team were unlucky not to get something from the game although the poor start must be addressed for future matches.
