Football - 1st XI V King's - Lost 2 - 5

This was a stern test for the 1st XI which started brightly with a goal after only 90 seconds.

The College went straight on to the offensive and when a Henry Mathews shot from the edge of the box was deflected, the College took an early lead. The next 20 minutes saw a fight for midfield supremacy which King’s eventually turned into two slick finishes. Defensive complacency then gifted Kings a third. Half time 3-1.

The second half saw the searing pace of the King’s wingers create numerous chances and Jack Pearson had to excel himself in goal to keep the College in the game. A fantastic cross field ball from Charles Oakes was met with a thumping volley by Henry Mathews into the top corner for the goal of the game and a sniff of a equalizer. As the College pressed for an equalizer, King’s took advantage of the open spaces to score two more late goals.

This was a game where all the players made positive contributions but then struggled to assert themselves as the pace of the game laid bare a lack of fitness for some.
