Rugby - Year 7 v Christleton - Won 5 - 0
The Year 7 Rugby team travelled to Christleton missing a number of key players; the influential Nieto brothers were not present and the prolific Tom White missed out due to an injury.
Nevertheless, the squad travelled in confident mood, knowing that their hard work and commitment in training would stand them in good stead. The game kicked off and immediately saw the Abbey Gate team seize control. The organised forward pack were quick to the break downs and used excellent rucking and mauling technique to secure quick possession for the backs. In the opening exchanges Dan Roberts, Franc Antoine, Charlie Stratton and Rhod Balmer all threatened to break the Christleton defence but were thwarted by some determined tackling.
Christleton could not withstand the pressure much longer and an excellent dummy followed by some powerful and elusive running saw Franc Antoine open the scoring. This was closely followed by Charlie Stratton who made a break down the blind side and crashed over in the corner. Christleton endeavoured to hit back but excellent work by Nick Canfield, Pepijn De-Jong, Dan Meadows, Toby Matthews and Henry Kershaw saw Abbey Gate dominate the break downs and secure valuable turnovers. Blair Loggie ran his blood to water and was present at every ruck and maul to secure possession, highlighting his importance to the team. Shortly before half time Blair came close to scoring from a training ground move only to be tackled centimetres short of the line.
The second half saw some changes with Sam Burns and and Jonty Torr taking to the field. Christleton emerged from the half time break rejuvenated and tried in vein to break the Abbey Gate defence. Hard hitting and aggressive tackling from the back line, led by Captain Charlie Stratton saw the visitors hold firm. After some terrific tackling and strong running, Ewan Haigh was withdrawn from play and James Maudslay took his place on the right wing, making several telling contributions.
Abbey Gate went on to dominate the remainder of the half with Toby Matthews crashing over for a richly deserved try. Franc Antoine grabbed a second after some elusive running and Dan Meadows crossed the whitewash in the dying seconds.
It was impossible to select one Man of the Match as every member of the team contributed magnificently to a fantastic team performance. The as yet undefeated Abbey Gate squad travel to Bishop Heber for their next outing in what will prove to be their toughest test yet.
