Aldford Footballers Make It a Clean Sweep
On Friday 2nd December Aldford School welcomed football teams from Primary and Preparatory Schools across the North West and North Wales.
Teams from Abbey Gate School, The Firs and Saighton Primary made the short Journey to Aldford. Whilst Rydal Penhros brought a team all the way from Colwyn Bay, Fairholme travelled from Denbigshire, and Bridgewater School who travelled across from Worsley near Manchester to attend the event.
The tournament started with a perfectly respected minute of applause to mark the passing of Football Legend and friend of the College Gary Speed who will be sadly missed by many.
The group stages got under way at 10:30am on what proved to be a crisp December’s morning. This did not detract from the football on show as all teams produced some excellent performances. From the first round of fixtures it was clear that Fairholme, Rydal Penhros, Bridgewater ‘A’ and the formidable Abbey Gate College ‘A’ would be the teams to beat.
Abbey Gate College ‘A’, Fairholme and Bridgewater ‘A’ topped their groups with Rydal Penhros entering the draw for the main Cup competition as best runner up.
Of the teams in the Plate competition it was Abbey Gate College ‘B’, who grew as a team and produced some excellent performances after a shaky start and Saighton Primary who both progressed to the final. Both teams improved dramatically as the day went on and Saighton Primary turned out to be unlucky as a cross from Alex Mason raced through the crowd and into the bottom corner untouched with barely a minute left to play. Saighton threw everyone forward but Lewis Maundrell made a point blank save in the dying minutes to prevent extra time and seal victory for his team.
In the Cup competition, Abbey Gate College ‘A’ saw off Rydal Penhros on penalties with Alex Thomasson making a fantastic save in sudden death to reach the final. Whilst in the other half of the draw the fluent playing style of Bridgewater ‘A’ was more than enough the keep Fairholme at bay. Abbey Gate College ‘A’ had just enough to see them to victory in the final sparking wild celebrations on the touchline marking the second piece of silverware for Aldford School.
It would be unfair to pick a man of the tournament for each team as everyone played with total commitment, sportsmanship and effort. Abbey Gate College ‘B’ were led tremendously by Captain Sam Nieto and the ‘A’ team by Captain Louis Dearling who was instrumental in their victory.
The Abbey Gate College ‘A’ Team: James Ashfield, Louis Dearling, George Macready, David Mitchell, Joe Nieto, Alex Thomasson, Jack Royle and George Smith.
The Abbey Gate College ‘B’ Team: James Buchannan, Will Barton, Theo Cook, Charlie Fleet, Alex Mason, Lewis Maundrell, Sam Nieto and Joe Watkins-Stephenson.
Special thanks must go to Mr Dearling for all his hard work in coaching the Abbey Gate College ‘A’ team.
Mr Rowett
