Under 13s Football

Under 13s Triumph in Chester and District 7 a side

On Wednesday on a bitterly cold night a heart warming performance by the Year 8 footballers saw the College win its’ first C & D football trophy for many years.

The first game saw the College behind after a minute but this was to be the last goal conceded all evening by the outstanding William Littlewood in goal. James Faulkner, Jorge Percival and Josh Kresynak were strong and resilient in defence; Eddie Speed and Billy Reeves totally dominated the midfield with intricate possession football and Dan Parker and Fergus Cowper supported the electric pace of Tom Donald.

King’s, Upton and Tarporley were all outplayed and beaten on the way to winning with a stunning Billy Reeves strike winning the semi final whilst the final was won 7-6 on penalties against Tarporley.

Well done to all the boys.

Hull football Tournament- Monday 15th March 2010.

The Under 13 football team made the overnight journey to Hull for the School football tournament. After a morning tour of the KC Stadium (Hull Citys ground) the team started their 4 team Round Robin group.

The first game resulted in a 3-0 win and after a draw in the second game a win in the final game saw the college top their group. A tense semi final saw the boys behind twice but with only 30 seconds left a great finish by Tom Donald took the game to extra time and then penalties. The Abbey Gate players kept their cool scoring the first three penalties and after a Leeds Grammar miss Alistair Marks confidently stroked home the next penalty to win the game amid wild celebrations.

The exertions in the semi final seem to affect the team in the final in which they were beaten by The Grange.

An outstanding effort by all 15 boys concerned and thanks you to Mr Barton for organising the trip.

Under 13s V Oswestry School (Away)

Won 6—2
Scorers: Connor McGovern-Scott (3), Tom Donald (2) & Fergus Cowper,.

The College team arrived at Oswestry in good spirits and were looking forward to bouncing back after their exit from the Cheshire Cup last week. The pitch was extremely soggy and wet due to the torrential rain from the previous night, however the College soon got into their rhythm of fine passing and counter attacking play. Throughout the game the home side could not get out of their half and they were fortunate to go two goals ahead totally against the run of play. The College did respond in the first half with Connor McGovern-Scot’s first of three goals.

The second half became far worse for the home side, the College were determined to put the game to rest and did so within 10minutes of the restart with two goals from Tom Donald and one from Connor McGovern-Scott. The College did not stop there and continued to push forward to score as many as they could. Another from Connor McGovern-Scott and one from Fergus Cowper sealed the game with 5 minutes remaining on the clock. Everyone played superbly well and thoroughly enjoyed the encounter.
Man of the Match: Connor McGovern-Scott – Hat-trick hero.

Under 13s v Ellesmere Port Catholic High (Home)

Lost 4—2 AET
Full time 2-2

Goal scorers: Edward Speed and a Catholic High Own Goal

A fine performance from the College youngsters who once again were very unfortunate to be on the losing side. The game started at 100 miles per hour with both teams struggling to get a foot on the ball and begin their passing game. Once the game settled down it was the College team who scored first when fine interplay between Edward Speed, Daniel Parker, Jorge Percival and Josh Kresnyak resulted in the goal of the game. Edward Speed at the end of the move found the top right corner of the net from 20 yards out, a well deserved lead. Soon after the College made it 2-0 from a corner by James Faulkner, which resulted in the goal keeper pushing the ball into his own net.

The second half was very different from the first; the visiting team began their fight back and managed to score early in the half and midway through. This was not a game for the faint hearted, as the College team pressed forward so did the opposing team, many gaps occurred and both teams missed chances that should have been scored. Tackles became stronger resulting in the opposing team getting the first booking of the game.

Extra time was no different in terms of the College’s drive and motivation to win the game. The visitors struck twice during extra time, which resulted in the College’s U13 team being eliminated from the Cheshire Cup.

Well done to all involved, I thought you were outstanding and deserved to go into the hat for the next round.

Man of the Match: William Littlewood – first to every ball and demonstrated true grit and determination.

Under 13s V Christleton High School (Home)

Won 1-0

The under 13 team started the season with a potentially tough fixture against local rivals Christleton High School. Last years team has been strengthened by the addition of Josh Kresnyak and Connor McGovern-Scott both of whom have settled in well.

Abbey Gate dominated the game throughout with  workman-like performances in midfield from Eddie Speed and James Faulkner. Up front, Tom Donald was a constant threat whilst Will Littlewood and Billy Reeves were outstanding in defence.

The opposition acquitted themselves well but were unable to make the necessary impact needed to breach our defence. Their goalkeeper and central defence did exceptionally well to keep the score down to just 1–0.

The one goal we did score was a well taken effort by Tom Donald.

Hopefully this is a sign of things to come and we can look forward to another successful season.
