Maths: The Year so Far

Abbey Gate College Mathematics Department – 2008/9 the year so far:

September:
Alexander Gray wins the Key Stage 4 Famous Mathematicians Poster Competition with an excellent, visually eye-catching entry on the great Leonhard Euler.
Anna Williams wins the Key Stage 3 Mathematics Department Logo Competition. Her logo neatly picked up the college colours with some well-known mathematical symbols, and is now widely used by the department.

November:
The Senior Maths Challenge brought two Gold awards for Alex Mathews and Mike Evans, a Silver award for William Hockedy and two Bronze awards for Katie Bates and Jake Feather.

December:
The Abbey Gate College team of Annabelle Edge, Mike Evans, William Hockedy and Alex Mathews finish an extremely creditable fourth place in the Senior Team Maths Challenge at Christleton College.

January:
Very encouraging Year 11 module results from the November exams.
Year 6 pupils enjoy creating 3D shapes from spaghetti and jelly babies and exploring their properties and Euler’s formula as part of their taster day.
Year 11 pupils discover better ways of finding lines of best fit than “ruler wiggling”, use mathematics to model projectiles including bananas, find out how mathematics can be used to plan postal routes and explore the world of imaginary numbers on their taster day.


Still to come later this year:

February:
Year 10 and 11 participate in the Intermediate Maths Challenge.
Years 11 – 13 attend the Maths Inspiration lectures at the Liverpool Playhouse Theatre on How to Cheat at Mind-reading, the Maths of the Rock Guitar and Maths Inside the Computer.


March:
Two notable days in the mathematics calendar – watch out for activities in class:
4th: World Maths day
14th: World Pi day

April:
Years 7 & 8 – Junior Maths Challenge

May:
A team of Year 8 & 9 pupils will compete in the Junior Team Maths Challenge.
