Duke of Edinburgh update May 2010
Further opportunities have been made available to pupils completing the Award sections of the Duke of Edinburgh Award recently.
Twelve pupils from the Silver Award in Year 11 recently completed a one day emergency First Aid course in College, which hopefully will become a life skill they never have to use, especially not on the Assessed Expedition! The First Aid course gives pupils the opportunity to practice resuscitation techniques and obtain a basic understanding of the protocol in emergency situations. The pictures demonstrate the hands on practical experience gained by pupils throughout the day.
At the end of April the Year 11 pupils also took part in a refresher training day in preparation for the Silver Assessed Expedition in June with a day of navigating along the Sandstone trail near Beeston Castle. The normally quiet surroundings were surprisingly full due to a Medieval Festival but this did not detract the pupils from their map reading tasks under the guidance of Mountain leaders.
The College this year has 52 pupils at Bronze level and 24 at Silver for the Assessed Expeditions at the end of June and at present they are all completing route cards and tracings of their proposed walks. The Year 9 are also entering the training stage for the Bronze Award with an orienteering task at Delamere Forest at the end of July. As part of two days of activities they will also have to navigate to Manley Mere and then enjoy an overnight camp followed by a day of water and land based activities.
Well done to all the pupils taking part in the Award especially those who are mentoring pupils and assisting with extra curricular activities as part of the Community Service aspect of the Duke of Edinburgh Awards.
