Rugby Success for Abbey Gate College at National 7’s tournament
On March 23rd Abbey Gate College were invited to the Independent Schools Association National Under 18 Rugby Sevens Tournament. In the opening pool games Abbey Gate came across tough opposition but still managed to qualify for the quarter finals of the cup competition.
A comfortable win against Licensed Victuallers’ School meant that Abbey Gate faced Princethorpe School, from Northamptonshire, in the semi-finals. A slow start saw Abbey Gate College 19-0 down at half time but a resilient display in the second half allowed Abbey Gate to run out 26-24 winners and into the final.
The final against Claire’s Court School, from Maidenhead, was hard fought but tired legs saw Abbey Gate College gain the runners-up spot. This is a fantastic achievement for a young squad who are all eligible to play in the Tournament next year.
This success mirrors the development of rugby in the College over the last two years which goes from strength to strength at all age groups.
