On Tuesday 3 March, a team of four pupils represented Abbey Gate College at the UK Mathematics Trust Team Challenge, hosted by West Kirby Grammar School.

The competition brought together 13 schools from across the region for an afternoon of rigorous and thought-provoking mathematics. Across several varied rounds, students were challenged to apply logical reasoning, numerical fluency and clear communication under time pressure. Success depended not only on mathematical ability, but also on teamwork, resilience and careful strategy.

Our team approached each round with focus and determination, working collaboratively and supporting one another throughout. The atmosphere was competitive yet collegiate, and it was encouraging to see our students engage so positively with complex problems that required both speed and sustained concentration.

We are pleased to share that Abbey Gate finished 5th overall in a strong field. In such accomplished company, this represents a very creditable performance and reflects the thoughtful preparation and steady composure our pupils brought to the day.

Beyond the final standings, the experience itself was invaluable. Opportunities such as the UK Mathematics Trust Team Challenge allow pupils to stretch their thinking, refine their problem-solving skills and enjoy mathematics in a dynamic and demanding setting.

We are grateful to the organisers and to West Kirby Grammar School for hosting such a well-run event, and we congratulate all involved. Most of all, we commend our team for representing the College with intelligence, integrity and quiet confidence.

For those who enjoy a mathematical puzzle, we have included a past challenge question below – parents and pupils alike are warmly invited to have a go.
