Abbey Gate College Students Excel in the Cranmer Awards
Published on 13th November 2025
We are delighted to share that four Abbey Gate College pupils achieved outstanding results in the Cranmer Awards, the annual national competition organised by the Prayer Book Society to celebrate the timeless beauty of the 1662 Book of Common Prayer.
The competition, open to pupils aged 11 – 18, invites participants to recite a 3–5 minute passage from the Prayer Book “in a manner appropriate for a church service”, reflecting the dignity and rhythm of Cranmer’s words rather than a theatrical performance. Entrants are judged on clarity, projection, fluency, natural understanding of meaning and accuracy of delivery.
Representing the Diocese of Chester, Anna D and Will C-E were placed first in their respective categories – Senior (15–18) and Junior (11–14) – and will now go forward to the National Finals at Hampton Court Palace in February. Meanwhile, Holly S was awarded second place in the Junior section, and Amy R achieved second place in the Senior section – a tremendous accomplishment for all involved.
To reach this stage, the pupils each demonstrated exceptional poise, understanding and respect for the text. As Will and Anna prepare to commit their passages to memory for the national final, we congratulate all of our students for participated for their dedication and success in celebrating one of the great treasures of English religious literature.
