The heart of Abbey Gate College’s identity can be traced back to an oak beam dating from the 1400s, high in the Gateway Tower at Saighton Grange.
When the Tower was attractively restored in 1958, complete with Chinese silk wallpaper, the ancient beam bore a striking Latin motto: “Ne cede malis, sed contra audentior ito.” Translated, it reads: “Do not give in to evils, but proceed ever more boldly.”
These words, hand-painted centuries ago, have become the cornerstone of our College values – courage, resilience and determination.
Today, visitors do not need to climb the Tower to see it. A faithful replica of the beam is now displayed in Reception, where it continues to inspire every student, parent and guest who passes through our doors.
Abbey Gate College is proud to uphold this tradition, ensuring that the wisdom of the past continues to shape our future.
