At Abbey Gate College, education extends far beyond the classroom walls. Our thriving co-curricular programme offers students an extraordinary breadth of opportunities to develop new skills, explore their passions, and challenge themselves in ways that enrich both their academic and personal journeys.
At the Senior School alone, students can choose from over 80 clubs, societies, sporting and activity sessions each week – from the creative and performing arts to science, technology, sports, community initiatives and much more. Meanwhile, our Infant and Junior School pupils enjoy an equally well-designed programme, carefully tailored to inspire curiosity and independence at every age.
Something for Everyone
The weekly timetable is bursting with variety. Students might find themselves experimenting in Science Club, unravelling puzzles in Chess Club, joining the College Orchestra, getting hands-on in Young Engineers, or debating ideas in the Philosophy and Ethics Club. For those with an artistic flair, there’s Mindfulness Art, Dance, Film & Media, and even Crochet Club, while our linguists can hone their fluency in Spanish Chat.
Sport also plays a central role, with opportunities ranging from football, netball, hockey and gymnastics, to basketball, athletics and use of the College’s excellent gym facilities. Alongside regular training, students represent Abbey Gate College in fixtures across the region, with many progressing to county, national and even international level.
Our thriving Music and Drama provision is another highlight. With Chapel Choir, Jazz Band, and major annual productions, students gain invaluable experience of performance, collaboration and creativity. Individual tuition in instruments and Speech & Drama further extends this pathway.
For those seeking adventure and leadership, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award programme and wide-ranging educational visits – from theatre trips to sports tours and overseas expeditions – open up experiences that build resilience, independence and teamwork.
Guided by Values
Many of our co-curricular activities are also linked directly to the College’s values of Self, Service and Sustainability. Through student-led agencies – such as the Wellbeing Group, House Leadership, Food Committee and Sustainability Working Group – pupils play an active role in shaping College life, developing leadership, confidence and a strong sense of responsibility.
The Co-Curricular Fair
Each September, the College hosts a lively Co-Curricular Fair, where both new and returning students can explore what’s on offer. The event is supported by our enthusiastic student ambassadors, who share their experiences and encourage others to try something new. It’s a true celebration of the breadth and vibrancy of College life, and an excellent way for students to begin the year by joining activities that will enrich their time at Abbey Gate.
More Than Just an Education
With such a rich tapestry of opportunities available, Abbey Gate College ensures that every student can discover new interests, build lifelong skills, and develop the confidence to take on challenges – whether in the classroom, on the stage, on the sports field, or out in the wider world.
