As the academic year draws to a close, we take a moment to say a sincere thank you and fond farewell to a number of valued colleagues who are moving on to new adventures. Whether through retirement, new roles or simply a well-earned change of pace, each one has played a meaningful part in the life of the College and will be missed in their own unique way.
Mrs Duerden, who has worked one-to-one with one of our pupils over the past two years, will be retiring at the end of this term. Her quiet dedication and support have made a significant difference, and we thank her sincerely for all she has brought to the College.
Mrs Hall, who has been a part of Abbey Gate College for an impressive seventeen years – across both sites and most recently as Head of Learning Enrichment – is finishing in her current role to focus more fully on her consultancy work. She has been instrumental in building and developing our Learning Enrichment department, and the support she has given to children, families and colleagues has been extraordinary. A true advocate for individual potential, her insight and encouragement have lifted countless young learners. As Mrs Hall herself reflected, “It has been a privilege to support young people in overcoming barriers and finding confidence in their learning.” We wish her every success as she continues this work through her own business, and thank her warmly for all she has given.
And finally, we bid a very fond farewell to Mrs Ivory, who after eight brilliant years of supporting pupils, staff and parents, is heading into retirement. A cornerstone of the Infant and Junior School, there’s hardly a query she hasn’t solved, a pupil she hasn’t cheered up, or a colleague she hasn’t helped. Always the first to arrive, always smiling, and seemingly able to answer any question — we’re not quite sure what we’ll do without her! She leaves with our heartfelt thanks and very best wishes.
At the Senior School, we also say goodbye to several valued members of staff.
Miss Line joined us this year to provide maternity cover in the Sports Department. A talented and highly regarded sportswoman, she has brought energy, positivity and professionalism to the role, and we thank her for her contribution.
Mr Slingsby, who has led the Maths Department this year, is moving on to a new post locally. We’ve benefitted from his subject expertise, leadership experience and his supportive, kind approach in the classroom. As he departs, Mrs Thomas will step into the Head of Department role, following her successful tenure as Head of Year 11.
In the Modern Languages Department, we say goodbye to Mr Burdon and Mrs Worth. Mr Burdon, who has led our English as an Additional Language provision, is well known across both sites – not least for his warmth and humour on Junior School trips to France. Mrs Worth, a talented linguist and dedicated teacher, has brought passion and rigour to her lessons, guiding many pupils to exam success in French, German and Spanish. Between them, they leave a legacy of thirteen years’ combined service.
After thirteen years as Head of History and Politics, Mr Dickins is also leaving. A teacher of tremendous knowledge and enthusiasm, he has made History come alive for countless pupils – not only in the classroom but through a host of memorable trips and experiences. His passion for helping young people learn from the past has left a lasting impact.
The History Department also bids farewell to Mrs Neal, whose sharp intellect and clear guidance have particularly enriched the A Level experience for our sixth form students over the last six years.
We also thank Mr Huxley, a much-valued Science Technician, who retires after more than two decades of steadfast support behind the scenes. Always ready with equipment, advice and good humour, he has played a vital part in helping the department run smoothly since 2004.
Ms Hughes, who joined the College this year to provide one-to-one support through a specific Education & Health Care Plan, also finishes this term. We are grateful for the calm, individual support she has offered and wish her all the best.
Mrs York, part of our friendly and welcoming Reception team for the last three years, is also moving on. Her kind manner and professionalism have made a difference to so many staff, students and families, and she leaves with our thanks.
And finally, we come to Mr Cutler. After nearly 25 years of devoted service, Mr Cutler is retiring from teaching, though happily he will continue as our DofE Centre Manager – a role he has led with distinction for the last two decades. Known across the Independent Schools Association for his sporting expertise and generous sharing of knowledge, Mr Cutler’s energy and commitment have shaped generations of students. We’re thrilled he’s staying on to guide future adventures – including next term’s Barcelona tour.
To all of our departing colleagues, thank you. You have each helped to make Abbey Gate College the warm, supportive and ambitious place that it is. We wish you the very best for the future, and we look forward to sharing staff updates and introductions next term.
