Inspired by Attenborough: J5 Explore, Create and Discover
Published on 8th May 2026
As part of their transition to Senior School, our J5 pupils enjoyed a wonderfully busy Senior School Taster Day at Saighton Grange.
As this day fell on the 100th birthday of the legendary Sir David Attenborough, it seemed only fitting that many of the day’s activities carried a thoughtful nod to the much-loved naturalist and broadcaster.
In Art, pupils took inspiration from Julian Opie, focusing on capturing purposeful facial details before creating mixed media collages featuring animals encountered by Sir David throughout his remarkable life and career. Alongside their artistic flair, pupils also practised careful cutting and composition skills to bring their creations to life.
In English, pupils explored the themes of character, time and links to the animal kingdom. Working collaboratively in small groups, the J5 students created a range of imaginative metaphors to depict different characters’ personalities and behaviours. This kind of collaborative approach seeds even more of the Abbey Gate specials – encouraging confidence, creativity and thoughtful teamwork.
Geography saw pupils introduced to the concepts of biotic and abiotic factors within ecosystems. Making the most of the glorious sunshine, they ventured into the gardens to complete field sketches before identifying and labelling the living and non-living elements surrounding them.
Meanwhile, in Biology, supported by some of our Sixth Form Biology students, pupils learned how to operate microscopes, prepare slides and carefully observe and record their findings – an experience that certainly would have earned the approval of the birthday boy himself.
After an energetic afternoon of PE in the sunshine, the day concluded with a special Attenborough-themed assembly, celebrating curiosity, discovery and the natural world.
We were also delighted to welcome parents to the Library for a lovely afternoon tea, offering the opportunity to chat with staff, explore the Senior School environment with the help of our enthusiastic Year 7 tour guides, and become even more familiar with life at Saighton Grange.
For pupils and parents alike, it was a thoroughly enjoyable day and a wonderful glimpse into the exciting adventures that await in Senior School.
