Abbey Gate College is renowned for its excellent whole school Drama productions, with the recent spell-binding productions of Matilda and Les Misérables being particularly memorable.
As many students study Speech and Drama in addition to their timetabled class lessons, the standards achieved in whole school productions are excellent. The intimate setting of the theatre provides a wonderful atmosphere for the audience with a real sense of drama. The annual whole school play can include students of all ages, including juniors or it may be a more adult production with mainly senior students; this creates great diversity and variety.
Musical Theatre Club has become a popular activity which enables students to express themselves through Dance and Singing alongside Drama. Students meet weekly to stage and rehearse their own creative adaptations of current Musical Theatre repertoire in a lively and energetic environment. Students are encouraged to elect the chosen contemporary material and choreograph and direct the presentations.
Key Stage Three Drama Club is an opportunity for lower school students to enjoy improvisation workshops and build skills in character development, dialogue and voice and movement. In the Summer Term students can take part in a scripted outdoor performance in the beautiful College gardens attended by parents and local primary schools. In recent years the Summer productions have been Shakespeare’s ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream and Willy Russell’s ‘Our Day Out’.
