Abbey Gate College is celebrating a remarkable achievement after being awarded the prestigious Methuen Drama School and Group Prize at the National Youth Monologue Competition.
Following their success as North West winners of the Schools and Groups Award, four Abbey Gate College students and their families travelled to London’s West End on in mid June to compete in the National Final at the Trafalgar Theatre, accompanied by Head of Drama, Mrs Pitcher.
The competition attracted more than 4,000 entries from across the country, making the students’ achievements all the more impressive.
Representing Abbey Gate College on the national stage were:
- Flora M – KS2 Screen Monologue
- Amira M – KS3 Screen Monologue
- Amy R – KS4 Classical Monologue
- Marcus E – Sixth Form Classical Monologue
Each performer delivered an outstanding monologue in front of a national audience, demonstrating the confidence, commitment and creativity that have characterised the College’s journey throughout the competition.
There was further cause for celebration as both Flora and Amira were awarded runners-up trophies in their respective categories, an exceptional accomplishment at such a highly competitive national event.
The biggest accolade of the day, however, was reserved for the College itself. Abbey Gate College was awarded the Methuen Drama Schools and Groups Prize, presented to the national winning school or group in recognition of the overall quality of the monologues submitted by its students.
Receiving this award against a backdrop of more than 4,000 entries from across the country is a tremendous achievement and reflects the strength of performance opportunities available across the College.
Throughout the competition, all of Abbey Gate College’s entrants benefited from the expert guidance, encouragement and mentoring of Mrs Pitcher, Mrs Faithfull and Miss Toosey. Their support helped students refine their performances, develop their confidence and prepare for competition at the highest level.
Mrs Pitcher, Head of Drama, said:
“To see our students perform with such professionalism and poise on a West End stage was incredibly special. Reaching the National Final was a tremendous achievement in itself, but for Flora and Amira to be recognised with runners-up awards, and for Abbey Gate College to receive the Methuen Drama Schools and Groups Prize, is simply fantastic. I am immensely proud of every student who entered the competition and contributed to this success.”
This national success caps an extraordinary year for Performing Arts at Abbey Gate College and highlights the depth of talent across the school, from Junior School through to Sixth Form.
Congratulations to Flora, Amira, Amy, Marcus and every student who took part in the competition. Their commitment, creativity and willingness to challenge themselves have helped secure a truly memorable national triumph for Abbey Gate College.
