Work is well underway on an exciting transformation of our General Science laboratory, with the classroom undergoing a significant refit to create a modern, inspiring space for practical learning.
The project has been made possible thanks to the generous support of our community through the Founders’ Fund. This is the first of several ambitious development projects that will transform learning and play spaces across the College, with plans also including two brand-new play areas at our Infant and Junior School, as well as a unique and inspiring Film Studio at our Saighton site.
Honouring the past, shaping the future
The redevelopment of the General Science laboratory has benefited from a particularly special connection to the College’s history.
Roger Slater, a College Trustee and former teacher at Abbey Gate, has provided expert knowledge and guidance throughout the project. Roger taught at the College from 1979 until 2016 and, during his time here, was Head of Science and instrumental in the development of the original General Science area.
He also played an important role in the construction of the Science Block in 1980, which was officially unveiled by the Duke of Westminster. The occasion represents another significant link between the College and the Grosvenor Estate, with which Abbey Gate has such a long and distinctive association. A contemporary newspaper clipping captures the occasion, with Roger pictured alongside students and the Duke – a wonderful snapshot of the College’s history.
With his unique understanding of both the history and development of science teaching at Abbey Gate, Roger has been a fantastic consultant on the project, providing valuable input into the design and approach to the refurbishment. His expertise has complemented the work of our Estates team, with Estates Manager Diane Coakley working directly with Labform and the fitters to bring the plans to life.
A modern space for modern learning
Although the laboratory is still very much a work in progress, the transformation is already taking shape. The completed space will provide students with a modern, practical and purpose-designed environment in which to learn, experiment and develop their understanding of science.
We look forward to welcoming students into the newly refurbished laboratory at the start of the Autumn Term, when this next chapter in the story of science at Abbey Gate will begin.
The General Science laboratory is just the beginning. The generous support of our community through the Founders’ Fund is helping us to invest in the spaces where our pupils learn, discover, play and grow.
Watch this space as we share more of our Founders’ Fund development projects and the difference they are making across the College.
