As the conversation around education changes, so too does the idea of what it means to be ready for the future.
The Prime Minister has highlighted the importance of giving young people the skills they need for the world beyond school, with a clear message that academic and technical routes should be valued equally.
Speaking about the Government’s plans for education and skills, he said:
“Whether you’re going into construction, coding or classics, you should have the skills you need to get on in life.”
It is a message that resonates with something we believe strongly at Abbey Gate College: there is no single route to a successful future.
That means recognising that every student is different. Different strengths. Different interests. Different ambitions. And sometimes, a different idea of the future altogether.
Your future. Your route. Your Sixth Form
For some students, that future begins with A Levels and university. Our A Level provision offers the academic challenge, independence and subject expertise needed to progress to university and higher-level study.
But academic study is not the only route to a successful future.
From this September, our new Level 3 Health and Social Care course will offer a vocational pathway for students interested in people-focused careers across health, social care, education, wellbeing and related sectors.
Our Film Studies course provides another opportunity to explore a dynamic and growing creative industry, developing skills in critical analysis, communication, storytelling and visual literacy. With a new media classroom soon to be built, students will have an increasingly purposeful environment in which to explore film and media.
These choices reflect the breadth of ambitions within our Sixth Form. They also reflect our belief that education should prepare young people not simply for their next qualification, but for whatever comes next.
Abbey Gate College Sixth Form. It’s Personal.
Because being ready for the future is about more than grades.
It is about discovering what you are good at. Finding subjects that genuinely interest you. Building confidence and independence. Developing the skills to communicate, collaborate, think critically and take responsibility for your future.
And sometimes, it is about changing your mind.
GCSE results day doesn’t have to mean the end of the conversation
For students receiving their GCSE results next week, there will be excitement, relief and celebration. There may also be questions.
Perhaps your results have opened up possibilities you had not considered. Perhaps your original plans no longer feel quite right. Or perhaps you have simply realised that Abbey Gate College is the right fit for you.
Whatever the reason, your next step does not have to be the one you first imagined.
Our Sixth Form offers students the opportunity to continue their journey in a community where their education can be shaped around their individual strengths, ambitions and future plans.
Whether that means A Levels, vocational study, a creative pathway, university, further training, an apprenticeship or employment, what matters is finding the route that is right for you.
That is what makes Sixth Form at Abbey Gate College personal.
Your future. Your route. Your Sixth Form.
