Abbey Gate College Shortlisted for Outstanding School Drama Department Award

We are delighted to announce that Abbey Gate College has been shortlisted for the Outstanding School Drama Department Award at the Music & Drama Education Awards 2027.

It is a wonderful recognition of the work taking place across Drama at Abbey Gate College, and particularly of the way our provision has developed from the grassroots upwards. Drama at AGC is not simply about putting on a show. It gives students the opportunity to find their voice, develop confidence, work creatively with others and discover the many skills that come from stepping into the spotlight.

That development can be seen in the breadth of opportunities now available to our students, from classroom Drama and co-curricular activities through to House competitions and larger-scale productions. There is a real sense of momentum, with students increasingly taking ownership of their performances and enjoying the challenge of creating something together.

Just as importantly, the College encourages students to look beyond the school stage and pursue opportunities in the wider world of Drama and the performing arts. Through individual guidance, preparation and encouragement, students are supported in developing their skills and confidence for auditions, performances and further study. For some, this has opened the door to drama schools and other specialist training, helping students take the next step towards pursuing their passion beyond AGC.

That spirit will be very much in evidence next week, when our House Drama Competition takes to the stage. Students from across the Senior School will perform as part of their Houses, bringing their own ideas, interpretations and theatrical ambition to the competition. It is precisely this kind of grassroots participation that helps Drama to flourish at AGC.

And there is plenty more to look forward to. Early next year, students will take to the stage for our exciting musical theatre production of Oliver!. With its memorable characters, much-loved songs and opportunities for students to contribute both on and off stage, it promises to be a fantastic addition to the AGC performing arts calendar.

Being shortlisted for the Music & Drama Education Awards is particularly pleasing because it recognises not just one production or one moment, but the wider development of Drama across the College and the commitment of the staff and students who make it possible.

The Music & Drama Education Awards celebrate excellence across the education and performing arts sectors, and we are incredibly proud to be among the 2027 finalists.

Whatever happens on awards night, this is a moment worth celebrating. And with House Drama just around the corner and Oliver! waiting in the wings, there is certainly plenty more drama to come.
