We are celebrating after winning the Outstanding Conservation Initiative Award at the 2026 National Conservation Education Awards, hosted by Chester Zoo.
The award recognises the success and impact of the Cheshire Schools Sustainability Conference, an initiative conceived, organised and led by Abbey Gate College that has become a leading platform for environmental collaboration among young people across the county.
Now in its third year, the conference has grown significantly since its launch in 2023 and brings together students, educators and partners to explore environmental challenges and share practical solutions. The 2025 conference welcomed more than 140 students aged 8 to 18 and 15 staff members from eight schools across Cheshire.
Led by our student Heads of School and officially opened by the Lord Mayor of Chester, Councillor Sherin Akhtar, the event encouraged students to exchange ideas, showcase sustainability projects and develop partnerships focused on creating positive environmental change.
Participating schools included Bishop Heber High School, Christleton High School, Guilden Sutton C of E Primary School, Huntington Community Primary School, Saighton Primary School, Tarporley High School and The Firs School, Chester.
Throughout the day, pupils engaged in workshops, presentations and discussions addressing key environmental issues, demonstrating the creativity, leadership and commitment of young people determined to make a difference in their schools and communities.
Mrs Flatman, our Head of Sustainability, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to have won this award. The Sustainability Conference was created to bring young people together, inspire collaboration and empower students to see the difference they can make when they work collectively.
“To have this recognised nationally is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the enthusiasm and dedication of all the students, staff and partner schools involved.”
The conference forms part of Abbey Gate College’s Community Partnerships Programme, which connects schools, charities, businesses and community organisations to create meaningful opportunities for collaboration and shared learning.
Mrs Pitcher, our Community Partnerships Coordinator, added:
“This award celebrates the power of partnership. The conference has shown what can be achieved when schools come together to learn from one another, share ideas and work towards common goals. We are incredibly proud of everyone who contributed to its success and look forward to continuing to strengthen these partnerships in the years ahead.”
Sustainability is one of Abbey Gate College’s three Pillars of Purpose, alongside Self and Service, and is embedded throughout school life through curriculum initiatives, student leadership opportunities and community engagement projects.
Our Headmaster, Mr Craig Jenkinson, said:
“Winning a national award is a tremendous achievement and recognition of the values that sit at the heart of Abbey Gate College.
“This success belongs to our students, staff and partner schools, whose passion and commitment have created something truly special. We are proud to be helping young people develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to become the environmental leaders of the future.”
The College extends its thanks to Chester Zoo, the participating schools and everyone who has supported the conference’s growth over the past three years.
